The
J.H. Hawes Grain Elevator Museum offers several educational resources that can
be used to extend and reinforce the learning that takes place during visits to
the elevator (or to the online exhibit).
Online Exhibit
The museum website features an interactive exhibit that allows visitors to explore
the J.H. Hawes Elevator as it was in 1920. Activities in the online exhibit include
the following:
- Animations of elevator mechanisms functioning
- "Try It Yourself" activities that allow visitors to attempt
various tasks in the operation of the elevator
- "Listen Back in Time" audio vignettes that give visitors the
opportunity to hear 1920s elevator personalities in conversation about topics
relevant to the elevator and the times.
Lesson Plans
Currently, three Illinois State Standards-aligned lesson plans are available
for educators. More are being developed for the elevator, so be sure to check
back occasionally for new lessons and educational materials.
Professional Development for Teachers
Teachers can schedule training at the elevator that will provide them with ideas
and strategies for incorporating the J.H. Hawes Grain Elevator Museum and its
assets into their curriculum. Contact the Grain Elevator Museum for more information
or to schedule a professional development activity.
